Guess what? The show that I am going to do at the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Feb 7th as part of the Lincoln Center's American Songbook series I Bought A Blue Car Today has been invited to the Sydney Opera House as part of the Mardi Gras festival from Feb 19-22nd 2009!! I know!
Here's what I said about being part of the Mardi Gras Festival.
“Sydney is one of my favourite places in the world, so to be asked to come and perform during Mardi Gras is a real thrill for me,” he tells SX. “It is 20 years since I first performed at the Opera House in a two-man show, and now it’s just me. In 20 years’ time I will be appearing via hologram!
I’m also really excited to be performing a show that, for me, is a real departure, in a city where I have always felt welcome and where people really seem to enjoy life.”
And here's what I didn't say but it's quite accurate I suppose!:
From Dolly Parton, Elton John and Mika to Chess, Falsettos and Garfunkel, Cumming will interpret what he calls “the queer songbook” – a diverse range of Broadway tunes and popular songs mixed up with camp conversation and storytelling about the last 10 years of his life in America.
His electric and eclectic track list promises to be as full of surprises as the man himself. In his only Australian shows, this intimate experience is sure to be a hit and is expected to sell out early.
Sydney Opera House will celebrate Mardi Gras in 2009 with its biggest, outest, loudest and proudest season ever featuring four fabulous shows in the comfy surrounds of The Studio. Having staged some of the best local and international queer artists as part of the gay and lesbian festival since 2003, next year’s program is no exception.
Ticket to the Mardi Gras Party are now on sale from Ticketek (www.ticketek.com.au, Ticketek outlets and on 13 2849).
