Family Equality Council

Because of my portrayal as Rudy in  Any Day Now I was asked to become a member of the Family Equality Council Board of Advocates. The Board of Advocates\' mission is to ensure equal rights for the one million moms and dads in the U.S who are LGBT and the two million children they are raising.

The Family Equality Council is a wonderful organization working to change hearts and minds and to advance social justice so that all families are respected, loved and celebrated. They are America\'s foremost advocate for LGBT family equality and work to achieve their goal by building community through national events and regional programs; providing direct support to LGBT families and prospective parents; educating the American public on issues and securing inclusion in legislation, policies and practices impacting families.

Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research

I have recently become an Angel Ambassador for Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research, which was created in 1996 by my friend Denise Rich in memory of her daughter Gabrielle, who passed away at the age of 27 after a long and valiant struggle with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia [AML].

The purpose of Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research is to encourage the development of more effective therapies for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and related cancers. The Foundation funds innovative clinical or basic science research that will lead to novel therapeutic approaches that could replace, or be used in combination with existing effective therapies. Such therapeutic approaches could include alternative or complementary medicine. The Foundation funds research to improve the efficacy of cancer treatments, reduce their toxicity and improve the quality of life of patients with leukemia or lymphoma. The Foundation also supports limited scientific interchange between select leaders in different areas of bio and integrative medical research, to develop unique and important collaborative efforts that will lead to improvements in the treatment and care of patients with leukemia and lymphoma.

As an Angel Ambassador, I will help engage and educate young people in the importance of cancer research, introduce a new generation to Gabrielle's Angel Foundation through personal stories of survival and change, and inspire young people, through Gabrielle's story, to donate and save a life.

Intact America/Norm-UK

I think circumcision is genital mutilation and I am horrified that it is happening on such a mass scale and with so little discussion or forethought about the dangers and the impact on the future lives of the little boys involved.

So I am very happy to be patron of Norm-Uk, which aims to advance the education of the public in all matters relating to circumcision and other forms of surgical alteration of the genitals, including alternative treatments and offering information and advice on such matters.

And also I am on the board of advocates of Intact America whose mission is to protect babies and children from circumcision and all other forms of medically unnecessary genital alteration, whether carried out for cultural conformity or profit, in medical or non-medical settings.  We seek to achieve our goals through education, advocacy, public policy reform, and the empowerment of our supporters, partners, and volunteers.

The Friends of the Birks Cinema

I am a Patron of The Friends of the Birks Cinema, an organization that is working to restore the Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy, Scotland, where I was born, to its former glory.

Sadly, for many years all you heard about was cinemas closing in this rural area, but now it’s a different story. As someone who loves film, I’m excited by the idea that the town where I was born could soon have a world class cinema right on its doorstep. The Birks Cinema has my backing, and I hope it has yours too. So I encourage you to visit their website and help out in any way you can.
